As legends and folklore go, few tales persist so eerily in collective consciousness as the story of
Ichabob Crane and the Headless Horseman. Penned in Sleepy Hollow, New York by
Washington Irving, the author utilized actual names of his contemporary townspeople for the characters in the story. Lurking through the Sleepy Hollow cemetery today you can find the tombstones of Brom Bones, Katrina Van Tassel, and poor old Ichabod himself.
