One of New York’s most notorious street Irish gangs, the name Dead Rabbits is derived from a bastardization of the Irish word, Raibead, meaning “man to be feared.” In 1857 a popular folk tune was penned to remember the infamous battle of the Dead Rabbits and the Bowery Boys.
