In 18th century England the term Swell (n.) was often used to describe a fashion movement of the time called Macaroni, in which men would dress and act with outlandishly dandyish style, sometimes “exceeding the ordinary bounds of fashion.” However, on American shores the term Swell came to note any remotely fashionable man. Interestingly, in the tune “Yankee Doodle,” the line “stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni” is meant to imply the Americans lack of sophistication in matters regarding fashion.
