The Dutch settled New York in 1624 and called it New Amsterdam. They also settled the surrounding lands known as Broncks and Breukelen which they cultivated as farmland. The village of Breukelen neighbored villages known as Boswijk (Bushwick), and Vlacke Bos (Flatbush). Today Brooklynites commonly pay homage to these forbearers by the ceremonial Dutch cigarette.
