April 14 marks the anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination by the hands of John Wilkes Booth. On that evening, our President was enjoying the comedy Our American Cousin on the stage at Ford’s Theatre. Booth, always with a flare for drama, timed his gunshot with an expected uproar of laughter from the audience, then jumped down to center stage and exclaimed in Latin “Thus always to Tyrants,” a reference to Julius Caesar’s assassination.
