Hours before his pivotal 1860 campaign speech at the Cooper Union in Manhattan, Honest Abe reportedly stopped in to one of Bowery’s penny theatres for little lewd comedy and some belly laughing. Years later, while tickling his funny bone at a performance of Our American Cousin, the great emancipator took one in the head.
