In 1851 Captain Samuel Very sailed the newly christened Hurricaneclipper ship to California. Touted as the “The first vessel to San Francisco” and “the fasted clipper ever built,” she lost her masts in a … hurricane off the coast of Cape Horn. The ship eventually hobbled to San Francisco the following year. This woodcut is from the actual lithographed ship card advertising the voyage.
